Are you thinking about contact lenses and not sure what wearing them involves? Then we have a few pieces of advice and tips to help you get started.
Probably the most important information is that you don’t have to be afraid of anything. Wearing lenses is comfortable—after all, millions of people all over the world wear them. Contact lenses are classified differently in different countries; in some places they are directly considered a medical device, and as such their production is always tied to strict supervision and inspections. Lenses must meet many regulations and certifications.
How can you recognize quality lenses? The first clue is the price—if something is very cheap, it can’t meet all the regulations and manufacturing requirements. The second clue can be the country of manufacture—if the lenses are Made in Korea, Malaysia, the EU, the USA, etc., then there is a small risk that you’ll run into a low-quality brand. And the third clue, perhaps the most important, is the lens brand, or rather information about the seller—if someone has been selling lenses for several years and has quality independent reviews, then there is a small risk that they are selling low-quality products.
But now to the tips to get started:
- wash your hands (not with soap that can irritate when it comes into contact with your eyes).
- when handling the lens, use your fingertips, never your nails (they are sharp and can damage the lens)
- never rinse lenses with plain water. Use only contact lens solution.
- place the lens on the pad of your index finger and check that it isn’t damaged. The lens must have the shape of a bowl (edges turned upward)—if the edges turn outward, the lens needs to be flipped. With some colored lenses, this can be determined by the color of the lens.
- with your other hand, hold your lower and upper eyelid and insert the lens into your eye. You don’t have to place the lens directly in the center of the eye; it will center itself. Slowly close your eye and blink slowly a few times. This allows the lens to find the optimal position in your eye.
- if the lens is inserted correctly, there is no unpleasant feeling or limitation of vision
- the first time you put them in, you may experience unpleasant sensations. In that case, remove the lens and let your eye rest. Gradually you should get used to it. Wearing them must never be painful or uncomfortable for the eye.
- don’t be alarmed if at first the lens falls out of your eye with the first blink, or if when inserting it doesn’t stick in the eye but instead turns and stays on your finger. It takes a little practice and getting rid of nervousness. After a few tries, you’ll be able to put them in even without looking—it’s really simple.
- removing the lens from your eye isn’t rocket science either—either very gently pinch the lens in your eye and remove it, or place your index finger on the lens and slide it onto the eyelid, where it will roll up—and then put it into the case with solution.
- place lenses into solution that is always fresh—the solution cleans, disinfects, and moisturizes the lenses. Replace the case regularly—about once every 3 months (or every time you run out of solution and buy a new one—practically every package also includes a case.
- if you don’t wear lenses for a longer time, it’s necessary to change the solution they are stored in as well—about once a week
- try to blink more often—this moisturizes the lenses while wearing them and keeps them comfortable
- if you are in a dusty or smoky environment, consider moisturizing drops—they add comfort while wearing. They must be moisturizing drops for contact lenses.
- don’t sleep in lenses and don’t wear them if your eyes aren’t 100% healthy
