Summer with Colored Contacts: What You Can (and Can’t) Do at the Pool, While Playing Sports, or Napping in the Sun

Summer’s the perfect time to shine—literally. Sunshine, water, festivals, good vibes. And to top it off: colored contact lenses that make your look pop whether you're heading to the pool, a concert, or just grabbing an ice cream. But what if you’re new to contacts? They’re not quite like slipping on a pair of new sandals—you need to show them a bit of love. Let’s go over the do’s and don’ts, so you can enjoy summer with confidence and clear vision.

Can I wear colored contacts in the water?

Short answer: Better not swim with your contacts in.
Longer answer: Pools, lakes, and oceans are full of bacteria, chlorine, salt, and other lovely things that don’t mix well with your eyes—or your lenses. If water gets between your lens and your eye, it can cause irritation, or in worse cases, infection.

Want to rock colored lenses for a quick poolside selfie or a stylish moment? Go ahead—just avoid submerging your head, and be sure to clean your lenses thoroughly right after. If you’ve been splashed or lounging near the water, no big deal. Just don’t treat contacts like swim goggles—they’re not made for that kind of adventure.

What about sports, dancing, or staying active?

Good news—colored contacts (yes, even with prescription!) are way more practical than glasses when you're on the move. They won’t slip, fog up, or break when you dive for that volleyball.

Here’s what to keep in mind:

  • Sweat, dust, and wind can all irritate your eyes or shift your lenses slightly. Keep contact lens solution, a case, and rewetting drops handy just in case.

  • Don’t forget your sunglasses—even if you wear contacts. UV rays and eyes are not best friends.

  • Planning an all-day trip or event? Give your eyes breaks throughout the day and avoid touching them with sunscreened, sticky, or sandy hands.

What if I accidentally fall asleep wearing my contacts?

Let’s be real—it happens. Whether it’s in a hammock, on a beach towel, or during a road trip, summer naps are sneaky. If you doze off with your contacts in, it’s not the end of the world. But your eyes might not be thrilled about it.

You might notice:

  • Dryness or irritation

  • A gritty feeling

  • Blurry vision

What to do? Blink a few times, use some eye drops, and give your eyes a break. If the lenses still feel off, remove and clean them, and maybe go glasses-only for the rest of the day.

A few extra tips for beginners (and forgetful pros):

  • Always wash your hands before touching your lenses. Summer = sunscreen, sand, burgers, popsicles... aka germs.

  • Never share your lenses, not even with your BFF or sibling. Eyes are not one-size-fits-all.

  • Colored lenses are available with prescription, so you don’t have to choose between seeing clearly and looking fabulous.

  • Keep a backup pair of glasses at home—just in case your eyes want a rest.

Most importantly: Have fun with it!

Colored contacts are a fun way to level up your summer style—whether you're going full cosplay, hitting a rooftop party, or just curious to try something new. With a little care and common sense, you can enjoy them all season long.
